We don't know anywhere near as much as we think we do, but we continue to think that we know best, we don't. Similar things must happen that we know nothing about, nature follows it's course. Sometimes, even if it is not to our liking, we must let go. Loving nature and our fellow creatures is not just about keeping them alive, it is also about knowing when to let go, even if this means letting them, or helping them, die... Don't think bad of me, but I think they should release the young one's body to the sea. It lived there, died there, and should return there at the end!

Much as it is one of the last things we would have wanted Louise, it was probably the only way it could end. The last thing we wanted was for this little one to suffer... Rest in peace our friend!

Hi everyone! It is really sad... The humpback calf has only a little chance to survive :( Hopefully they will find another pod with a female which adopts the baby! Otherwise it would be the best, if they would put it to sleep. Great to hear that you had a nice day on the water with the Ts! I wish everyone a lot of fun and many orcas at the OL reunion! Enjoy!

Hi all! We had a wonderful day on the water with Sharon yesterday - saw a small group of transient - I believe it could have been T30's. One of the experts on board mentioned that these transients had made a kill shortly before we saw them. Our boat drove very slowly by Race Rocks and Sharon and I waved like mad to the camera in the hopes that someone somewhere was watching. Wishing all those travelling up to the reunion a safe journey and a wonderful time together - may you see many orcas. :-))

why don't they do what the did with the starnded grey whale i think it was jay?? i don't remeber much details, other then seaworld took her in, fed her and then let her go back into the wild. why don't they do that with this little calf? couldn't the feed it the same formula that they fed the other whale...
ej@duncan
20 Aug 2008 14:26:39 PDT

Good day to everyone. We are concerned about the tiny humpback as well and Doug cannot figure out why they don't try feeding it from a barge supplied with a formula and a tube hanging under the barge for him to feed from. It would be worth a try but I could find nowhere on the page to post a comment to suggest the idea. They could use a similar formula to what they use for captured orcas. Just three more days till OL08 and I am getting excited andexhausted from getting ready. Not as young and running out of gas, lol. It was so nice spending a day out whale watching with Leona from Germany. I guess we got lucky with the weather as it poured buckets of rain when I took them back to the ferry and it was a horrendous trip back home.We will be in Pt McNeill Saturday afternoon and if anyone is wondering we will be eating dinner at the Haida Way hotel around six.See you all there. Happy travelling everyone.

I'm afraid for that young one there isn't much hope Louise. If mum isn't around, which seems probable, then chance of survival is slim. All we can hope is that the end comes quickly... Even if it is back amongst the limited protection of local boats, how can it survive without food? If humans could feed it, it still wouldn't be getting the imunity to germs and bacteria it would get from it's mother's milk..

Little Humpy without a mommy...isn't interesting that we wouldn't even know what to feed a baby Humpback? We know so so little about so many critters. It reminds me of the first Orcas taken captive from the Southern Residents. They were fed cod but the Orcas wouldn't eat them...little did humans know. If I was a lost baby Humpback I would find a boat too...it might be the only thing between it and a hungry Orca.

Thank you, Steve for the links :). As for the biofuel waste, it sounds like they have found a loop hole for clear cutting in Ontario. I know for a fact they have been waiting for years to start cutting away trees in Northern Ontario. Even though the article says forestry waste, I can guarantee you, more then just waste will be hauled out. Not to mention, killing off more ecosystems in the north. Nice loop hole indeed.
